Stainless Steel Pump Casting

Stainless steel pump casting is a common manufacturing part for pumps. Especially for OEM pump manufacturers. JC Casting is a stainless steel pump casting factory and manufacturer. We use investment casting, also known as lost wax casting, to manufacture complex pump parts with smooth surfaces and tight tolerances. We also use sand casting to cast the large-size pump parts.

Pumps commonly used materials are:

  • cast iron,
  • cast steel,
  • stainless steel,
  • carbon structural steel (UNS G10450),
  • alloy steel (40Cr).

Stainless Steel Grades for Pump Castings

There are many grades for Pump Castings. But as per the final applications, below grades are the main stainless steel materials suitable for pump castings:

904L Stainless Steel

904L is a type of “super austenitic” stainless steel. It has good anti-corrosion ability. This makes it perfect for chemical centrifugal pump castings.

  • Its composition includes: 14.0–18.0% chromium, 24.0–26.0% nickel, and 4.5% molybdenum.
  • It’s a low-carbon, high-nickel, and molybdenum austenitic stainless steel. It can fight acid corrosion well.

316L Stainless Steel

316L is a commonly used material that resists corrosion. It works for most chemical substances. Especially in environments where 304 stainless steel isn’t protective enough.

  • 316L stands out for its corrosion resistance and strength.
  • It’s often used to make parts of chemical pumps, like the pump body and impeller.

Duplex Stainless Steel (SS2205, SS2207)

Duplex stainless steel mixes the benefits of austenitic and ferritic stainless steel.

  • It has high strength and good corrosion resistance.
  • It’s suitable for moving slurry (thick, gritty liquids) that contain corrosive parts.
  • It’s commonly used to make slurry pumps.

Choosing the Right Stainless Steel The choice of these materials depends on the pump’s working environment and the type of substance it handles.

  • 904L is best for extremely corrosive environments.
  • 316L works for general corrosion needs.
  • Duplex stainless steel is chosen when both strength and corrosion resistance are needed.

Stainless Steel Pump Casting Processing

For now, there are 2 main processes for Stainless Steel Pump Casting: Silca sol Lost wax investment casting and Sand Casting.

Silica sol casting has the advantages of high precision, complex molding and surface quality. It has become the first choice for small and medium-sized batches of high-precision stainless steel pump castings. Such as medical pumps and corrosion-resistant chemical pumps.

Sand casting has process flexibility and cost advantages. It is suitable for the production of large, non-precision stainless steel pump parts. Such as mine drainage pumps and ship pumps.

In actual production, comprehensive selection can be made based on product requirements. For example: silica sol casting is used for impellers to ensure fluid efficiency. Sand casting is used for pump body base to reduce costs. To achieve process complementarity.

JC’s typical stainless steel pump castings include:

  • Stainless Steel Pump Casing
  • Stainless Steel Pump Head
  • Stainless Steel Pump Cover
  • Stainless Steel Pump Impeller
  • Stainless Steel Pump Housing
  • Stainless Steel Pump Shell
  • Stainless Steel Pump Mounting Bracket
